This spectacular city has undeniably the most glorious world history, a city which is worshipped by gods and people. This enchanting Greek capital is marked as the birthplace for modern civilization and is now a fascinating, multidimensional city. There are frequent fast and inexpensive domestic flights from Athens airport to the dazzling islands such as Mykonos, Santorini and Crete. Piraeus, a short drive from Athens, is the starting point for an island-hopping adventure of the Saronic Islands of Poros, Hydra and Spetses. The stylish seaside areas of Glyfada and Vouliagmeni, are situated nearby and should be visited, particularly to experience the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, where wounded turtles are nursed back to health.
If you are visiting Croatia, we would recommend that you combine the trip with an Athens experience. You could also visit other famous Greek Islands whilst visiting. There are frequent low-cost flights from Split and Dubrovnik, that we can arrange.
Explore the UNESCO-listed ruins of the Acropolis of Athens and dive into the mythological world of Ancient Greece. It is located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance. The most famous of these buildings is the Parthenon. Its monuments are universal symbols of the classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex bequeathed by Greek Antiquity to the world. In the second half of the fifth century BC, Athens, following the victory against the Persians and the establishment of democracy, took a leading position amongst the other city-states of the ancient world. A visit to Athens would not be complete without a visit to the Acropolios and Parthenon.
The Athens National Archaeological Museum offers some of the most important artifacts from a variety of archaeological locations around Greece from prehistory to late antiquity. It is considered one of the greatest museums in the world and contains the richest collection of artifacts from Greek antiquity worldwide and should be included on any itinerary to this fascinating city. The museum was established in 1829 and you will find a huge collection of ancient and iconic artifacts from statues, pottery, jewelry, weapons and utensils and even an ancient computer.
The Temple of Hephaestus, built around 450 BC was previously known as Hephaisteion and even earlier as the Theseion and is a well-preserved Greek temple and is still intact, one of the few that is still entirely preserved. It is a Doric peripteral temple, located at the north-west side of the Agora of Athens, on top of the Agoraios Kolonos hill. This imposing temple was built from Pentelic marble, while its sculptures are made of Parian marble. The Temple of Hephaestus was designed by Iktinus, one of the talented architects who also worked on Parthenon. From the 7th century A.D. till 1834, this temple was an Orthodox church dedicated to Saint George Akamatus. It definitely needs to be on your list of experiences when visiting this extraordinary city.
