Lungo Mare promenade

The Lungomare is an elegant promenade, commencing in the small fishing village of Volosko and stretching all the way to the Lovran harbor. This charming seaside walk was built in the 19th century.

The construction of the promenade, which also carries the name of the ., began more or less at the same time Opatija (at that time known as Abbazia) was declared the first climatic health resort on the Adriatic coast. According to some records, the Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph built the promenade for his wife, empress Elisabeth of Austria, better known as the beautiful Sisi. Sisi suffered from a type of lung disease so she visited Opatija to take walks and enjoy the town´s mild climate which helped her health.

Discover Volosko

Volosko, a fishing village where life has long been oriented towards the sea, is today a very popular gourmet destination with excellent restaurants. The Mediterranean spirit is woven into the architecture of Volosko, with its traditional stone steps and narrow streets hiding several art galleries and ateliers. The heart of Volosko is its small fishing harbour, known as mandrać, which is today a stage for performances of klapa vocal groups and jazz music, as well as other artistic events.

Another reason for visiting Volosko is its beaches and the seven-mile long Lungomare seaside promenade, which starts in Volosko and winds its way along the coast to Opatija and further on to Lovran.

Angiolina Park

Angiolina Park is one of the most celebrated parks in Croatia and the most famous park in Opatija. With a great variety of plant species from different parts of the world, this park can be described as the green heart of the town. The camellia, which thrives in this park, has become a symbol of Opatija. Apart from this wonderful flower, the park is also home to the American pine, Himalaya cypress, glossy-leaf paper plant, and almost 150 other plant species.

Take a stroll along the park’s gravel paths that will lead you to the charming Villa Angiolina and its quaint bandstand to take in an evening concert.
