Korcula is a relatively large island to the south of Hvar Island, and south-west of Croatia’s mainland city, Split. The island itself is relatively large but, at 20 miles long and only 4 miles wide on average, it is definitely more of an elongated island. Regardless, the island offers so much to do, see and experience. Its location further from Split and Dubrovnik compared to other Croatian islands like Hvar, mean that it is much quieter from a tourism point of view. That said, for travelers heading to Korcula, there is still an overwhelming choice of where to stay so here are some ideas.
Located on the north-eastern tip of the island is Korcula’s Old Town. Because of its medieval landmarks like churches and palaces, as well as Roman ruins dotted around the town, it has often been named as “Little Dubrovnik”. This is certainly the charm of it though, as you can walk around the city at your own pace, embracing the historical element yet enjoying the modern comforts like the bars, restaurants and cafes. During the summer months, Korcula Town will home some sort of event, be it a small music festival or a showcase of local artists, there is likely to be something to wander around. Other things to see in Korcula Town include Lands Gate, the Revelin Tower, the Sea Gate and St Mark’s Cathedral. For those who want to be in the heart of the island, as well as being close to the boat and cruise arrival points, it’s a great place to stay.
In comparison to Korcula Town, this neighbourhood named Vela Luka is on the other side of the island (the very western tip). This is the main entry point for car ferries which immediately makes it busier compared to other destinations on the island. It is also the arrival and departure point for food businesses – particularly fish and olive oil. With this in mind, it’s still surprisingly quieter than Korcula Town itself, and being located on the very tip of the island, with panoramic views out to the sparkling Sea, it has been titled one of ‘Croatia’s sunniest spots’. The Great Cave is a fascinating spot in this neighbourhood and from the moment you step in, it’s 17 meter-tall caved ceiling will take you by surprise.
Lumbarda is located on the very eastern tip of Korcula Island. Although the neighbourhood is only a few kilometers from Korcula Town (north of Lumbarda), this neighbourhood is completely different in its landscape. Stand anywhere in Lumbarda and you will either see a vineyard or an olive grove. It certainly offers an insight into rural Croatian life on the island of Korcula. Lumbarda also offers some great beaches, restaurants and waterfront promenades. It is a good place for families to stay as there are lots of activities and excursions to be enjoyed, as well as a variety of accommodation options.
Although the neighbourhood of Zrnovo is not too far from Korcula Town itself, it is the complete opposite in terms of atmosphere and ‘busyness’. Zrnovo is one of the smallest neighbourhoods on Korcula Island as it is made up of small four hamlets. As a result of its size, it is much quieter and offers seclusion and tranquillity. It’s therefore perfect for couples who are looking for somewhere more remote and private, but still with good accessibility to the town itself. The main attraction to Zrnovo is its landscape. Beautiful hidden beach bays, leafy suburbs and undiscovered coastal bays can be found here. Without the huge tourist numbers here, the food also tastes a lot more ‘local’ and some restaurants only serve traditional Croatian cuisine and dishes.
