Located to the south west of Hvar Island is the small island of Vis. Although the island is considerably smaller than other neighbouring Croatian Islands (like Hvar, Korcula and Brac), it is an island home to white-sand beaches, sea caves and some very important archaeological sites. The island became particularly popular when Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again was released. Most of this much-loved musical was filmed in both Vis Town, Komiza and Barjoska Beach. There are two main places to stay in Vis and interestingly, there is a friendly-rivalry between them.
Located in the north of the island is Vis Town. This town is in a little cove itself, with stunning views out to the Adriatic Sea and, on a clear day, across to Hvar Island. This is the more traditional and authentic of the two destinations to stay in on the island. As you walk around the town, you will notice iconic landmarks and squares from Mamma Mia 2. There are many architectural sites to see in Vis Town including the Perasti Tower and the Tramontana Palace.
Komiza is a small village on the western coast of Vis Island. Of the two destinations, Komiza has, arguably, a stronger history to local Croatians. Decades ago, Komiza used to be an area home to working-class fishermen and tradesman. It later became more of a residential area, particularly for working-class families. Today, Komiza is a beautiful blend of both the old and the new. Medieval stone buildings and ruins can still be seen throughout the town, yet the port and harbour have now been gentrified, home to cafes, bars and boat trips out to nearby islands and excursions. The Blue Cave is a must-see during your time in Komiza.
