The second largest city in Croatia is Split and, with beautiful beaches, Roman architecture and a cosmopolitan atmosphere, the city is the perfect place for explorers. Split’s international airport is the entry point for thousands of travelers each year but with several neighbours in the city, here is a short guide and an insight into some of the best.
The Old Town of Split has been important historically since the Roman Empire period. Large ruins and architectural landmarks can be found across the city, like Diocletian’s Palace and the fortress of Klis in the north. Walking through the cobbled streets of Split is enjoyable and the renovated seafront is lined with cafes, bars and restaurants – the perfect place to stop for refreshments. Although staying in Split’s Old Town can be busy, it is a great option for those who would like to be in the heart of the city. There are a mix of hotels in Split Old Town – some with contemporary and luxury design, whilst others are more classic in style, keeping its exposed stone walls and 15th century shell.
Veli Varos is a neighbourhood south of the magnificent Marjan Hill. Split’s Old Town is a short walk away (approximately 15-20 minutes) so it is very accessible to walk in for sightseeing throughout the day. This neighbourhood has a historic background to it, and a very local one at that. It was once occupied by farmers and fisherman in the 17th century. The waterfronts were filled with locals selling freshly-caught fish. As time went on, it became a more residential area, especially for those who couldn’t afford central Split. Today, Veli Varos has a cosmopolitan feel to it, with wine bars and restaurants found hidden through alleyways and courtyards. There are things to see in this area itself, such as the Church of St Nichalos, the Church of St Cross and the Franciscan Monastery.
For travelers looking for good nightlife and a nice beach, Bacvice is the perfect option. Located just a short distance from Split’s Old Town, day trips from Bacvice into the city are very popular and coming back to a luxury hotel on the beach is a nice way to end a long day sightseeing. The neighbourhood is particularly renowned for its beach. Bacvice beach is sandy and clean, and the sea is certainly attractive to swim in, especially in the summer months. That said, with bars and nightclubs on the beach shores, it certainly gets busy here, both during the day and night. Although there is not a huge choice of accommodation in Bacvice, it does home the oldest and most luxurious (five-star) in the area. This is Hotel Park and we would definitely recommend staying here.
Located in the south-eastern part if Split is Znjan. This neighbourhood is a great option for families traveling to Croatia. This is particularly because of its access to good beaches and its relatively relaxed atmosphere. The Znjan beach itself mostly pebbled with some rocky parts in places. That said, the sea is clear and shallow so it does make for a good place to base yourself for the day. Cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as other facilities like toilets and washrooms, line the cobbled cove which makes it very family friendly. With good accessibility into Split’s Old Town, Znjan is a good option for those who want to be a little further out, but with beautiful landscapes and seafront views.
