The largest of the Elaphiti Islands at 12 square miles, Šipan is a charming Medieval Island with scattered palm trees and is just a 8 miles from the city of Dubrovnik. In the 15th and 16th centuries many noble families from Dubrovnik built their summer residences on Šipan (pronounced Shee-pan.) There are two main towns on the island, Šipanska Luka and Suđurađ and there is an abundance of olive and fig trees, vineyards, oranges and pomegranates. The local, high quality wine is sublime.
In the latter, you can see remains of the renaissance castle of the family Stjepović – Skočibuha, whose construction was started in 1529. Also, you should visit the beautiful Pakljena tower which dates back to 1563. We would recommend a visit to Šipan before or after your cruise, as the island is so close to Dubrovnik.
Sipan Island (pronounced shee-pan) is the largest of the Elaphiti Islands at 11 square miles and ideal for cyclists. The main port is Sudurad (pronounced soodg-er-adg) is connected by road to Sipanska luka, a larger town. In between is a verdant valley of olive and fig trees, vineyards and citrus groves. Bikes are easy to rent from either Sipanska or Sudurad.
A boat trip around these picturesque and peaceful islands is the perfect way to admire this area of outstanding natural beauty. Of the 14 islands only the three largest – Koločep, Lopud and Šipan – are permanently inhabited but the others must be experienced. The islands get their name from the Greek word elafos, meaning deer that were based on some of the islands.
If you’re looking for an adventure, visit the crystal-clear waters, hidden beaches and deserted lagoons of the Pakleni Islands (Pakleni otoci), a gorgeous chain of wooded isles that stretches out immediately in front of the town. The name is often translated as ‘Hell’s Islands’, which is believed to come from paklina, a pine resin that was once harvested on the islands to water proof the boats.
