On the border of Montenegro and Albania, Lake Skadar is a beautiful expanse of glistening waters and mountainous backdrops. The lake, which is also referred to as Lake Scutari, Lake Shkodër and Lake Shkodra, is a great place to stay in Montenegro for those looking for some time amongst the countryside. Mountains, rivers and lakes go on for miles. Spending time hiking, kayaking and walking through the lakes and national park is a great option to end or start your itinerary.
To the west of the beautiful country of Montenegro is the Bay of Kotor. The Old Town itself is a historic town, famous for its rich history, architecture and charming streets. For those who are combining a Croatia itinerary or cruise with Montenegro, depending on how long you have, Kotor is a great option of where to stay because it reflects similar characteristics of Croatia. Approximately twenty minutes away from Kotor is another wonderful destination named Budva, located on the western shores of Montenegro. This is a relatively small and intimate city which encompasses its own Old Town, full of history, architecture and charm. The Adriatic Sea borders the town, so you can enjoy days out on the sea, water sports or simply admire the glistening Ocean from the shores of Budva. There are several neighbourhoods along the western coast of Kotor and Budva, each offering something unique and captivating.
For those who have a longer period of time in Montenegro, the Durmitor National Park is a great place to stay. With striking lakes, mountains and river canyons, it is an exceptional destination to enjoy the natural beauty of the country and step aside from busier cities or towns that you may have visited in Europe. There are various places to stay across the national park – some more suited to shorter or longer stays in Montenegro.
