Krk Island is an extremely diverse island in the northern part of the Adriatic, located near to the city of Rijeka, offering many cultural and historical places of interest. It is connected to the mainland by a toll bridge and is Croatia’s largest island. It’s landscape is varied from lush forests to rocky and steep coastlines. There are also an abundance on charming villages scattered around this magical island.
The walls of the city of Krk are two thousand years old and are the third largest walls in Croatia. The 13th century Frankopan castle must be visited, as well as the old City Hall and Cathedral, whose tower dominates the city. The island is situated approximately an hour’s drive from the resort of Opatija, which is the starting and ending point for some of our small-ship cruises.
Old Baska or Stara Baska offers the best beaches on the island of Krk, due to its immense beauty. It is wonderfully set, amongst the rocky hills and Mediterranean vegetation, with fabulous views of the nearby islands. The main beach in the area is called Veli Plaza and is right in the center of the town of Baska.
We would also recommend that you travel over by taxi boat to a more remote beach, Vela Luka.
The original village of Stara (‘Old’) Baska is situated close to Baska and dates back to the 14th century when refugees settled here from the Ottoman invasion. The main beach in this area is Zala beach which can be reached down some steep but delightful pathways and past some medieval churches.
A must on your itinerary is a trip to Vrbnik village on the east coast of the island and is one of the oldest settlements on the island. It is a charming medieval tangle of a town set atop a limestone outcrop, dramatically overlooking the Adriatic, 50 meters below. Apparently the world’s narrowest street is located here.
If you love history, visit the Glagolitic manuscripts that are kept in the Parish Church and are living examples of a dead Slavic language.
The Kosljun Franciscan Monastery Museum is situated 750 meters from Punat by taxi boat, on the peaceful islet of Kosljun. This 11th century islet museum has an absorbing ethnographic collection and also owns a rich zoological collection of a large seashell and unique animal specimens, such as the one-eyed lamb.
The monastery also has a rich library with around 30,000 titles including the Ptolemy’s atlas printed in Venice in 1511 (one of the three preserved copies).
