Hvar town is a port town with ferries to connect to the Pakleni Islands. This town has always been an Adriatic center of culture and trade. Between the 13th to 15th centuries, Hvar was part of the Venetian Empire. Hvar had an important naval base with a formidable fortress overlooking it.
Hvar town’s climate is a dreamy Mediterranean mix of mild winters and very warm summers. During hot summer days, a Mistral wind blows from the west, providing a comfortable respite from the heat.
Exploring Hvar and the surrounding regions is easy. Guided tours will take you to Stari Grad, Jelsa and Vrbovska. There are numerous idyllic beaches and bays ready for you to discover. From the moment you enter the Hvar Old Town through its 13th century stone walls, you’ll understand why it sees 22,000 visitors per day during peak season. Stroll through the elegant Piazza or amble along the charming streets. The historic center of Hvar Old Town is closed to vehicles. All the streets will lead you to Hvar’s Square, which is the largest square in Dalmatia and the town center. There you can view the Cathedral of St. Stephen and its renaissance bell tower.
You will find one of Croatia’s oldest towns right on the Island of Hvar. Stari Grad literally means “old town.” It features magnificent Mediterranean landscapes, with plentiful vineyards and olive groves. While you’re there, you’ll want to visit the church of St. Nicolas.

Hvar is the sunniest island in all of Croatia, but did you know it is also famous for lavender? If you travel to the nearby village of Velo Grablje, you will be swept away by the intoxicatingly fragrant fields of lavender. An annual Lavender Festival takes place in June.
