The Island of Korcula, sometimes called the Emerald Isle, is the sixth largest island in Croatia. This island is a bit of a hidden treasure because it is located a little farther away compared to Hvar and Brac. The three main towns on the Island of Korcula are Korcula Town, Vela Luka, and Lumbarda. There is evidence of inhabitants on the island since the Stone Age.
The island is small, approximately 20 miles long, but Korcula tours are full of breathtaking and fascinating experiences, and the Island of Korcula itself is packed with adventures and interesting things to do. The island is narrow, only about 4 to 5 miles wide in most places.
Korcula’s Old Town has Venetian-style buildings with red roofs and a wall surrounding the town, reminiscent of Dubrovnik. Because of the similarities, the Old Town is often referred to as, “Little Dubrovnik.” There are many cultural activities and music events throughout the year. The view of Pelješac peninsula is spectacular.
If you enjoy wine, take part in one of the many wine-tasting tours on the island. Korcula vineyards are prized for their white grape, pošip, the key ingredient in many of the best wines in Croatia.
Hidden coves near the island offer you plenty of privacy to swim, sunbathe and relax. On the western side of the Island of Korcula is Vela Luka, famous for Vela Spila, a cave that offers memorable photo possibilities. Proizd features a spectacular beach. Korcula old town is a medieval walled city positioned on an oval shaped area. The city itself boasts a succession of narrow streets that branch off the spine of the main street like a fish bone. Said to be the birth place of Marco Polo, you can visit his house and the Marco Polo Exhibition to learn more about his illustrious life. Visit the main square and the cathedral, both named after St. Marko. Just behind the main entrance to the town lies another smaller square, with illustrious, historic buildings.
The west side of the large bay is perfect for taking breathtaking pictures of the sunsets. You will find a delightful small town known as Vela Luka. It offers incredible experiences with the most intriguing being of the Vela Spila (Great Cave). This area is also known for the ‘Kalos health centre’ which opened in the 1960’s, There are several ways from Vela Luka to the cave, one being to take asphalt road from Kale cove that leads to the entrance of Vela Cave. Known for its medical mud deposits and springs of mineral water, you will feel healthier after visiting this beauty spot.
